Dialed In Podcast 005 ~ Traversing States of Consciousness with Yoga Nidra

In this episode of the Dialed In Podcast, we examine Yoga Nidra and it’s ability to help one traverse through states of consciousness. The practice is known to release trauma and bring about healing.

In Yoga Nidra, we remain in the space between the waking and sleeping states of consciousness, known in neuroscientific circles as the hypnagogic state. In this borderline state, we are able to absorb new pathways of change, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  Mental phenomena that occur during this "threshold consciousness" phase include (but are not limited to) lucid thought and lucid dreaming. It is a form of "going within" during which we enter a profound state of relaxation whilst remaining alert and aware throughout the process.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation.

  • Yoga nidra, because of it’s multiple applications, is a panacea for the tensions that we face in the world today.

  • In yoga nidra, the state of relaxation is reached by turning inwards, away from outer experiences, like in pratayahara.

  • In Yoga Nidra there is a precise order of rotation of consciousness throughout the body parts which induces a flow of pranic energy. Besides rotation of consciousness, there are other practices found in yoga nidra that are directly derived from the Tantras.

  • There are hundreds of types of Yoga Nidra and Yoga Nidra can be practiced by people of any religion or culture.

  • Yoga Nidra is designed so that it systematically induces the stages that one goes through when falling asleep. It is a great practice to assist those experiencing insomnia and problems with sleep.
